We began the morning with colored bears of all colors and sizes. The kids sorted, ordered, and counted the bears. Some kids even did some pretend play with the bears....making bear families and having bear tea parties!
Right after our morning circle, we headed out to the playground. Today there was LOTS of activity happening across the street at the Greek Festival, so we spent some time at the fence talking about what we could see. The kids had bunches of questions about "the festival"....but mainly they wanted to know why we weren't going!
Today was our first day of Music Therapy! It was a great group and the kids LOVED it! Ms. Gretchen lead the session, which started with a Hello song. And a guitar! There were three interns that helped Ms. Gretchen: Ms. Hannah, Ms. Rosey, and Ms. Kira. For the next song they passed out music sticks. Now....I'm not gonna lie....I was a little nervous that as they handed each child two wooden sticks! We used the sticks to keep a beat as Ms. Gretchen sang a song about some favorite foods. Each child picked a picture of a food out of a bowl to help finish the song. The next instrument was shakers. We shook the shakers while we sang a song about things we did this summer. Each child took a turn responding about something fun they did over summer break. Then we got our whole bodies moving by singing Head, Shoulder, Knees, and Toes. Ms. Hannah got the guitar back out to review the names of all the instruments and help us sing the Goodbye song. It was a fun filled session....the kids are already asking when Ms. Gretchen comes back!
Today we read I Like Ketchup Sandwiches by Lisa Conway. This is a story about a little girl who spends her time in the car thinking of things she likes. This helps her pass the time quickly and keeps her from getting bored. She likes ketchup sandwiches, dancing, hanging upside down from trees, talking to spiders, and even....burping! Some of the things that she liked, we all agreed were fun....and other things.....we decided as a class were not so fun!
For our language activity, we made a chart of some things that we like. Each child took a turn to add something to the list. We wrote about hot dogs, and music, and ice cream, and iPads, and dogs, and running. Then we sang a song using all the things from our list.
In art, we took some pictures from magazines and made an "I Like..." page. Several kids couldn't find pictures of the things that they wanted on their pages, so we got out the crayons and drew it instead. There was so much conversation about what was on each child's page....and who liked what and who didn't like what....it was fantastic!
You could tell that everyone was super tired today because by lunch we were all starting to get crabby. And.....it was super quiet as the kids ate! We had used them all up for the week! It was a wonderful first week of school! I am so excited to see all the kiddos again next week for more learning! What a great start to a great year!
