All About Me!

Day 2....the kids are starting to get in a routine and learn how the school day works!  The Touch and Feel this morning was full of Mr. Potato Heads and Mr. Potato Head parts.  The kids had fun identifying all the body parts and putting together funny faces!  Some kids chose to draw pictures of themselves at the table instead....but, we still all talked about what a "ME" looked like!

The playground was much more tolerable today.....not nearly as hot, with a nice breeze!  The kids were so excited about getting out there that they spent they whole walk talking about the things that they were going to do once we finally made it out there!  Running, playing, and today, sidewalk chalk.....there's never a dull moment outside.

Today we read What I Like About Me! by Allia Zobel Nolan.  This fun book proves to kids that, in a world where fitting in is the norm, being different is what makes us special.
The kids in What I Like About Me! are as different as night and day. And, guess what? They love it. Some adore the fact that their braces dazzle and gleam, others feel distinguished when they wear their glasses. Still others wouldn't trade their big feet for a lifetime of free video games. A mirror embedded in the last page let kids take a look at themselves and decide what they like best about themselves.

For our language activity, we made a class chart comparing everyone's hair color and eye color.  We had to use the mirror to check and make sure that we knew the correct color to make hair and eyes.  I think the mirror was a bigger hit than the chart....but either way....everyone took a turn and waited so nicely while their friends took their turn.

During art, we used the information from our chart to make our faces.  Everyone picked out a face with similar skin to theirs, and added two eyes and a mouth.  There were lots of complaints that the faces didn't have noses....so we used a crayon to make some noses too!  They picked the correct color yarn (which wasn't always the color they wanted) and made hair for their face.....and then colored in the eyes to match their own.  Some kiddos were super particular about the hair not matching exactly or the fact that it really didn't look like them.....but others were holding it up and having a conversation with themselves!

The kids are really hungry by the time we get to lunch.....not much talking....lots of eating!  You can tell when they get their energy reloaded because it gets a little louder and "busy".....a true second wind!

We ended the day with music.  There was a special song to match our theme that the kids loved!  They even requested it twice!  We also sang two of our most favorite songs, The Monkey and The Alligator and Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, before we said good-bye!  I can't believe how fast this week is going.....it's true.....time flies when you're having fun!
