A short morning circle and then we headed off to the playground. The highlight of the playground was most definitely the workers who brought wheelbarrows full of new mulch and placed it in piles. The kids counted the piles, and talked to the workers, and examined the new mulch.....all while the grown-ups were super vigilant because all this "work" required the gate to be open. The kids got a big kick out of that too!
Music Therapy was back today.....and it was a BIG hit! We started with a Hello Song where we all said our names. Next was the Hokey Pokey. The kids loved dancing around to the guitar. We sang a song about Ice Cream, where the kids had to name their favorite ice cream using visual cues and the wooden sticks. The music therapy interns handed out colored scarfs for the next song. They called out different colors and if you had that color scarf, you had to go to the center of the circle and wave your scarf around. Our last song used bean bags. You had to listen to the song to know the body part where the bean bag was supposed to go. After the Good-Bye song, the kids all said "thank you" and gave hugs and high fives.
Our story today was Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino. This book follows lovable Lloyd the llama on his quest to find out which of the other baby animal population has llamas for mamas. The riddles in the book had everyone shouting out the answers in anticipation of turning the page. Finally, at the end of the book, the llama finds his mother. We talked about how they looked the same, but the Mommy llama was big, and the baby llama was little.
Our language activity was all about identifying the differences between big animals (Mommies and Daddies) and little animals (babies)....and that they have different names! First, we got out the family pictures and talked about how our own Mommies and Daddies were big, and we were little. We all had two eyes, a nose, and a mouth....sometimes our clothes were even the same, but our size was different.....and we had different names! Animals are the same. Mommy and Daddy animals look the same as baby animals, they are just different sizes.....and they have different names too! We made a chart using some visual cues showing the size difference and labeled with the names.
We transitioned to art and made our own charts with some of the animals from our class chart. We sorted them onto the correct side of the paper....big or little. We glued them all in place and then we verbally reviewed the names.
Today was another great day! I can't believe we have finished TWO weeks of school already! Next week there is so much to look forward to as we begin talking about friends!
