Cock-A-Doodle-Do Like a Rooster

This morning we started the day with Floam.  Floam is a strange substance made of tiny little balls....it sticks together, but is easy to pull apart too.  It's really difficult for the kiddos to figure out....and hard to stop touching once you've felt it.  The greatest part about the morning was that they all worked together to make a huge pancake.  Each kid added their Floam to the pile, and seven little hands flattened it.

The playground was super fun today because they are tearing out the sidewalk on East Boulevard.  There were big tractors, excavators, trucks, and bulldozers to watch.  It was loud, but it far outweighed any of the playground activities.  As you can see, it had everyone's attention!

Music class is always fun!  Today we started with the Hello song.  We have to listen to all the different ways to say hello so we will know what to do. We clap, we wave, we sing, and then we sit down and get ready for music class.  Next we walked around the circle and pretended to be different animals from the jungle.  We roared like lions, slithered like snakes, and stomped like elephants.  The kids had a great time....and the grown-ups were out of breath!  The next song was one of our favorites:  Old MacDonald Had A Farm.  The kids had to look at the pictures to know which animal was next.  Because we have been practicing all week, we can identify all the farm animals and make their sounds!  We sang SEVEN Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed because there were seven children in our class today.  As each monkey fell off the bed in the song, one child sat down. We counted and sang the next verse.  One last song before Good-bye....Mary Had A Little Lamb. There were visuals to help us remember the words and sing.  The kids all talked about the new drum that the teachers used today.  They definitely wanted a turn to play it.....maybe next time!  Not sure if that's a skill we are ready to develop (says Ms. Kelly!!)

The book today was Who Wakes Rooster by Clare Hodgson Meeker.  Rooster's job is to wake everyone on the farm, but what if Rooster doesn't wake up?
It's morning on the farm, but it's dark and eerily quiet. Only one watcher is awake to discover who wakes rooster and to see the farm burst into life upon his crow.  The kids had a GREAT time cock-a-doodle-doing....but when found the video of the real rooster....you should have heard the giggles and gasps!

For our language activity we contrasted things that we see and do at night versus things we see and do during the daytime.  The animals and the people on the farm sleep at night....and the rooster crows and wakes them all up in the daytime.  There were some things that we couldn't agree on since some people take baths and showers and night, and some people do it in the morning.

Science is a big hit with the kiddos and we love doing it!  Today we made our very own night sky.  We talked about the things we would need to make a night sky....darkness (which is hard to come by in a building full of windows), stars, and a moon.  We punched holes in a shoe box, one for each child, and shined a flashlight through, like the moon, and projected a night sky on the wall of the hallway.  The kids thought it was really cool.  Now, I'm sure part of the allure was sitting in the hall in the dark, but part of it has to be because the science was so interesting....right?

When we got back to the room we reported what we saw, like real scientists  Only we used some art materials to make it more fun!  Black construction paper was our sky and we used Q-tips to paint white stars.  The kids apparently saw many constellations and shapes.....some of them were very particular about the exact placement.  Reporting science is very serious business!

What a fun week talking about Farm Animals.  Have a wonderful weekend.....next week will be here before you know it!
