A Visit To The Grocery Store!

This morning, after a Touch and Feel filled with plastic fruits, we read a social story to prepare the kids for the trip to Harris Teeter.  We talked about things we would see and how we act when we go to the grocery store.  There were many rules to review about holding the rope and not touching the fruits and vegetables.  The kids were very excited and could all name something for us to look for while on our trip.

Ms. Abby was here today with some fun soccer skills for us to practice.  First, we got in a circle and rolled the ball to a friend.  That friend's job was to stop the ball with their hands....just like a goalie might do.  Then, we moved on the practice some dribbling, which in soccer means traveling with the ball.  Last, and what the kids had wanted to do from the moment they saw the soccer balls, was kicking.  Each child took turns kicking the ball into the net.  The other friends cheered and yelled encouraging words....which was very nice to see such good sportsmanship from the class!

Right after Ms. Abby we headed down East Boulevard to the Harris Teeter.  The walk there was pretty exciting....we saw school buses, and dogs, and people cutting grass, and leaves of all colors, and a bus stop full of people, and even a group of bicyclists.  Who knew there was so much going on right outside our school!

Once at the grocery store, we toured the Produce Department.  There were all kinds of fruits and vegetables to explore.  We saw beans, broccoli, zucchini, squash, pumpkins, apples, bananas, potatoes, and lettuce.  We talked about how many different colors there were.  Peppers come in so many different colors....they had green, red, yellow, and orange.  Everyone had a opinion about what they liked to eat and what they didn't.  When we got to the oranges, the kids knew that we used them to make orange juice....which apparently a lot of you have in your refrigerators at home!  They knew lemons were sour, but when they tried to smell them they were disappointed.  We talked about how some fruits and vegetables have "skins" that we have to peel off before we eat them.  The skin helps protect the fruits and vegetables while they are growing. Before we left, we stopped for a taste of an orange fruit....that amazingly all the kids were eager to try even without knowing what it was.  It was cantaloupe.....which we practiced saying several times because it is a super hard word.  All my friends liked it....and some even requested a second piece!  We talked about how yummy some fruits and vegetables are.....and how healthy they are for us to eat!

On the walk back, the kids were dragging.  No one wanted to talk about the sites along the way.  Everyone wanted to know "are we there yet?"....and "when are we eating lunch?".  Needless to say....it was a long walk back to school!  The teachers all pointed out the importance of eating healthy fruits and vegetables, exercising, and sleeping at night.....so that everyone will be super strong for all the Out and About trips we have planned next month.

After lunch we had time for a story, so we read Out and About at the Supermarket by Kitty Shea.  The kids liked reading a book about all the things that they had just seen at the grocery store.  We all agreed that it was a fun trip and we learned about foods we eat.
