This morning started out different, as everyone dropped off at Lowe's instead of school. The kids didn't quite know what to expect, but they were certainly excited. We waited on all our friends to arrive and then we divided into three groups. We explained the scavenger hunt to the kiddos and talked about each item we would be trying to find.
Then.....we headed inside! Plants, and pumpkins, and more plants, and shopping carts, and garden hoses.....there was so much to see. As we found each item on our list....and we found them all.....we crossed it off with a marker. We had to go inside the actual store to find seeds and garden gloves, and there was only one shovel in the whole garden center, but before we left....everything was crossed off. The wind chimes and the forklift were definite highlights! We celebrated with a little free exploration in the pumpkin area!
The walk back was much quicker than we had anticipated. The kids all held the rope and talked about the different things they saw. We saw lots of Halloween decorations, a guy on a ladder, more pumpkins, and some dogs in a window. We crossed several streets successfully and even learned about the crosswalk signs and how they help us cross safely.
Back at school earlier than we planned, we read a story. My Garden by Kevin Henkes is a story about a girl who daydreams about a special garden that she would like to grow. She plants seashells, and grows a jellybean tree, and flowers change color whenever she thinks about it. The kids knew that these things couldn't really happen, but we talked about how fun it would be if they did!
We did a quick recap of the trip to see what the kids liked best....and what they could remember....and it was surprising all the things that they recalled. Everyone had something to say about the Out and About and they all can't wait to tell their mommies and daddies!
The kids were getting tired from the busy morning and the long walk, so we had lunch a little early today. It was unusually quiet.....that was a real give-away that they were ready for naps! A little music before we packed up, and the day was over! It's amazing how fast the time goes when we are Out and About in the world.
The kids did a great job today....and we can't wait for all the fun Out and About trips in the future! They are going to have so much fun learning!!
