This morning we copied one of Ms. Michele's activity for the Touch and Feel pool. We had cotton balls and clothespins. The kids had to us the clothespins to pick up the cotton balls. It took a while for them to figure out which way to hold the clothespin, which fingers to use to squeeze it, and how to hold it open long enough to grab a cotton ball. We thought it was just a fine motor exercise for their fingers, but their brains were really working the whole time too!
We met Ms. Abby in the courtyard today for all kinds of running, jumping, and kicking activities. She had three stations set up that the kids rotated through. The first was jumping. They each had to jump over a series of small hurdles and then some bigger bean bag shapes. Once that was complete they moved on to a running station where they ran a relay race with cones. The last station was a kicking station where you had to kick the soccer ball into the goal. It was LOTS of moving.....and the kids did a great job following directions!
The story today was Mrs. Wishy-Washy's Farm by Joy Cowley. This is a story about farm animals that do not like to take a bath. They decide to run away to the city. They get into big trouble when the mistake a people restaurant for the barn and spill paint in the hardware store. When they end up in animal jail, they are so very sad. But, Mrs. Wishy-Washy saves the day by coming to pick them up. Back to the farm they go....right after a bath!
After we identified all the characters in the book (which is our new word for the day), we practiced some sequencing and retelling of the story. Of course, the animal jail was the favorite part!
Then we deciding to do some dancing.....we found a video for a Mrs. Wishy-Washy Washer Woman song! It took a few times to get the hang of it, but the kids all thought that it was super fun!
For art today we made our own Mrs. Wishy-Washy people. We added bandana hats, hair, and rosy red cheeks....just like in the story. The kids gave their people eyes and a big smile. Then they "wishy-washed" all the way to lunch!
We knew that it was a busy day because lunch was unusually quiet! Everyone was soooo tired....too tired to even talk....despite all the teacher efforts! We sang a few of favorite farm songs from yesterday, then we packed up! I hope the kiddos get some rest....tomorrow is another fun day!
