Up, Up, and Away....

We started the day at the Touch and Feel pool filled with colored packing peanuts and plastic eggs.  The kids matched and sorted......and wondered aloud what kind of air transportation we could possibly be talking about today!  When we told them it was hot air balloons, they were super excited!

Today's book was Sally's Great Balloon Adventure by Stephen Huneck.  Sally, the main character in the book, is a black dog.  When Sally’s family visits a hot air balloon field, the Labrador retriever is tempted by the smell of fresh chicken coming from one of the balloons. She follows the delicious scent to a balloon basket, and—whoops—the balloon takes flight! Soon she’s soaring above the ground, looking out at the tiny people below as they try to bring her back down.

We learned all about parts of the balloon.  The basket is where the people (or dogs, in the case of our story) sit for the ride.  The ropes help drive the balloon in the right direction.  The balloon is really called an envelope.....which is a funny name since we already learned that we also send letters in an envelope. The balloon has burners, which make the fire that we can see inside the balloon.  That's what makes the balloon fly.  You turn the burners on if you want to go up, and you turn the off if you are ready to go down.  New vocabulary......and so pretty to watch the hot air balloons in the sky!

For art today, we made our own hot air balloons. We covered plates with colored tissue paper and tied on a basket with yarn.  There was some disappointment when the kids realized that these balloons couldn't actually float up in the air......no matter how hard they tried!
