All About FROGS!

The Touch and Feel this morning was full of FROGS!!  What a wonderful way to introduce our new theme.  The kids had lots of questions....but they also had lots of facts of their own to share!

Ms. Michele was here today with some fun, musical activities.  First, we played Musical Movements.  The children had to listen to the music while walking in a circle.  When the music stopped, all the children had to copy the movements from the card in front of the "leader".  We all took turns being the leader.....and then we picked our favorite movements and tried them again.  We did jumping jacks, toe touches, crab walking, arm circles, and squats.  It was a super fun work out!  Next, we divided into small groups and rotated through some fine motor practice.  One group drew animal habitats and practiced writing letters.  Another group found hidden objects in Gak.  The last group put tiny flat objects in a piggy bank.

Today's story was Too Many Frogs by Sandy Asher.  Rabbit lives alone. He cooks for himself, cleans up for himself, and at the end of the day, reads himself a story. It's a simple life, and he likes it. But one evening, Froggie shows up at his door. He wants to listen to Rabbit's story, too. Then he decides the story might be better while eating a snack-or three. The next night he tries lounging on a pillow-or ten. And, finally, he ends up bringing over his family-dozens and dozens of frogs! Rabbit has finally had enough; Froggie will have to go! But when he sits down alone to read himself a story, Rabbit realizes something is missing: someone to listen; someone to share a wonderful story.

After the story, we headed to the table for a fun science activity.  How do frogs eat?  We had already discussed that they had a very long, very sticky tongue.....but why?  And why don't people have a tongue like that? The kids came up with some great predictions like "if our tongues were sticky they would stick to our teeth and we couldn't talk".  We took some party blowers.....and pretended to be frogs by blowing them out to pick up flies off the table.  This was a BIG hit.....there were flies going everywhere!!  Because flies move fast.....and frogs don't have arms like people.....they need their long, sticky tongues to help them eat.

We used the blowers to help make are art more functional.  We gave our green paper frogs eyes.....and then added the blowers to their mouths.  Now, we have real frog blowers!!  The kids had a great time pretending to be frogs.....lots and lots of ribbiting!!

We are so excited to go to the Children's Theater tomorrow to see a performance of Too Many Frogs.  The kids loved the story today.....and it's going to be fun to see it come alive in a real show!
