Touch and Feel this morning was full of all sorts of medical supplies. Gloves, Band-Aids, cotton balls, Q-tips, and tongue depressors. The kids LOVED examining the teachers throat and eyes and ears! There may very well be some future doctors in the bunch!
Ms. Gretchen and friends were back today with some fun new songs about the dentist and the doctor. They gave each child a picture of a toothbrush to pretend brush their teeth while we sang a song about teeth. We sang about washing our hands....using lots of soap....rinsing the soap....and drying off our hands. The kids took turn blowing bubbles while we sang the second time through. We sang another song about shaking our sillies out where we had to listen carefully to know which body part to "shake". Our last song was a song about some super silly sounds....OO EEE, OO AH AH....that the kids thought was very funny! Only one more music class, then we will be all finished for the year. We sure will miss this fun time each week!
Our story today was Katie Goes To The Doctor by Liesbet Slegers. Katie doesn’t feel well—she has a cough, a runny nose, and she feels dizzy. Her mother explains that she has a fever and takes Katie to see the doctor. With her favorite toy in tow, Katie allows the doctor listen to her heart with a stethoscope, look in her ears and mouth, and touch her belly. When the doctor prescribes some medicine to take, Katie is excited to know that she will be feeling better soon.
For art today we pretended to be doctors. Each child had an arm that needed the doctor's attention. We took red crayons and gave our arms two different "boo boos". Then, the kids had to open two Band-Aids and put them on the arm. A wonderful, practical fine motor task! And some kiddos even had a build in reward when their Band-Aids were Angry Birds or Super Heroes!
Next week....we start learning about a different kind of community "helper".....the vet!
